Celebrating Growth, Tradition, and Innovation

 Celebrating Growth, Tradition, and Innovation

As we close out a vibrant year with our 22nd issue, I’m thrilled to bring you a magazine filled with transformative stories, reflections on key events, and insights that mirror the dynamic spirit of our times. This issue highlights key milestones across various fields, from bold economic policies to cultural collaborations, all carrying a message of resilience, innovation, and international partnership.

Our cover story delves into Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ historic budget, the first by a Labour government in 14 years. With a pledge to “fix the foundations” of Britain’s economy, Reeves introduced substantial tax hikes, including a £40 billion increase aimed at funding essential services like the NHS and education. Her approach underlines Labour’s commitment to social investment—but as the dust settles, we all await the real impact on the economy.

December’s arrival marks the economic powerhouse that is the UK’s Christmas market season. This period sparks a hiring surge and gives a significant boost to retail, with companies like Amazon even expanding their workforce to meet demand. The holiday markets are a lively testament to Britain’s economic pulse in winter, bringing festive cheer and financial growth alike.

In healthcare, Türkiye’s largest healthcare provider, Medicana, has officially joined the UK’s medical landscape by taking over a clinic in Winchester. Operating since September, the Medicana Winchester Clinic combines the high standards of UK healthcare with a touch of Turkish hospitality—a proud milestone for both Turkish and British communities. We look forward to seeing other healthcare groups follow suit.

Also in focus this issue is Dr. Daron Acemoğlu, whose Nobel Prize win in Economics brings tremendous pride. His groundbreaking research on institutions and economic prosperity has redefined the field, and his contributions resonate globally.

This year also marks an important milestone for Türkiye İş Bankası, celebrating its 50th year in the UK and 100 years in Türkiye. To commemorate the half-century of business in Britain, İş Bankası hosted a special event, with plans for more celebrations throughout the year. It’s a proud legacy of strengthening ties between Türkiye and the UK.

For Turkish professionals navigating the UK job market, “Navigating the UK Job Market: A Guide for Turkish Professionals” offers practical insights and tips to support our community in making confident strides in their careers.

On a personal note, I’m thrilled to share two projects close to my heart. My documentary, Sunflower, which explores the poignant history of the Greek-Turkish population exchange, has recently resurfaced in honor of the 100th anniversary of this historic event. After a special screening at Cappadocia University on September 20, I will have the privilege of attending a showing in Athens on November 3. This centenary of the population exchange is a deeply somber moment for both communities, and I am truly honored that Sunflower continues to resonate with audiences in Türkiye and Greece. I am also proud to announce that applications are now open for Sustainable Life Through Art, a project I am curating that merges creativity and sustainability, supported by the British Council’s Creative Collaborations Programme. Partnering with the Susako Sustainable Arts Cooperative in Kocaeli, this initiative will bridge Turkish and British artists in a meaningful cultural dialogue, and I am truly excited about its potential.

As we close out 2024, I encourage you to read our feature on the Limehouse Library Hotel. Turkish entrepreneur Önder Şahan has created a one-of-a-kind “living museum” hotel, with 75 uniquely designed rooms inspired by iconic historical figures. Limehouse Library Hotel offers an unparalleled blend of history, design, and luxury, making it a must-visit destination in London.

Christmas lights are up, markets are bustling, and it’s time to bid farewell to another year. Thank you for being part of our journey as the UK’s only Turkish magazine. Your support means the world to us. Stay connected, share our stories, and let’s continue building a vibrant community together. Here’s to celebrating our shared culture and achievements—let’s keep the conversation going!. Wishing you all a joyous holiday season and a wonderful start to 2025.

Warm regards,

Dr. Ayla Torun
