Legendary Tale of “The Flying Dutchman” Opera Takes the Stage in a Grand Production by Istanbul State Opera and Ballet in Ataturk Cultural Centre in October and November.
Richard Wagner’s first masterpiece, The Flying Dutchman (Der Fliegende Holländer), composed and written by Wagner himself, is set to captivate audiences at the Atatürk Cultural Centre’s Türk Telekom Opera Hall. Directed by renowned German director Sebastian Welker, this iconic opera tells the supernatural story of a cursed ghost ship and its captain, condemned to roam the seas for eternity, searching for salvation through the love of a faithful woman.
First performed in 1843 at Dresden’s Königliches Hoftheater, The Flying Dutchman weaves a dramatic narrative where the titular Dutchman is only allowed to step on land once every seven years. His curse can only be lifted by the true love of a woman, but any woman who betrays him will share his eternal damnation. In this retelling, the Dutchman lands near a Norwegian village, where he meets Daland, who offers shelter in exchange for riches. Upon learning Daland has a daughter named Senta, the Dutchman wonders if she could be the one to finally save him.
Themes of death, redemption, sacrifice, and love dominate the opera, showcasing Wagner’s distinctive style that would also permeate his later works.

Conducted by İbrahim Yazıcı, with set designs by Efter Tunç, costume designs by Serdar Başbuğ, lighting by Yakup Çartık, and choreography by Emre Karaca, this production is a stunning collaboration of artistic talents. The Istanbul State Opera and Ballet Chorus is directed by Volkan Akkoç.
The roles will be performed by an impressive cast: Alper Göçeri / Murat Güney as The Dutchman, Perihan N. Artan / Evren Ekşi as Senta, Umut Tarık Akça / Göktuğ Alpaşar as Daland, Efe Kışlalı / Hüseyin Likos as Erik, Aylin Ateş / Deniz Likos as Mary, and Berk Dalkılıç / Yoel Keşap as The Steersman.

The Flying Dutchman will be performed from October 12-17 and November 2-6 at the AKM Türk Telekom Opera Stage. Don’t miss this grand production that promises to enthrall audiences with its legendary tale and powerful performances.
