Spring in London and Istanbul: A Season of Shifts, Stories and Shared Spaces
We’re delighted to share that the 25th issue of Turkish British Magazine is now live and available to read.
Spring often brings new beginnings — and in both Istanbul and London, it has arrived with unmistakable energy and change. From unfolding political developments to cultural awakenings and thoughtful reflections, this issue brings together the voices, visuals and stories that define this unique moment across the UK and Türkiye.
This issue’s cover story proved an editorial challenge: March and April were politically charged months in Türkiye, with the arrest of Istanbul’s mayor triggering one of the largest protest waves in recent years. Rather than offering a chronological summary, we approached the story through the lenses of youth, economic precarity, and media control — all elements shaping the next chapter of civic resistance.
Meanwhile, early May’s local elections in the UK delivered a seismic political shift. The rapid rise of Reform UK and significant losses for the governing Labour Party sparked fresh questions about the country’s direction. In our political pages, we offer an analysis of these electoral dynamics and what they may mean for British democracy.
Trade, too, is in flux. This issue explores the deepening UK–Türkiye economic partnership, alongside a broader look at global trade currents. As progress unfolds between London and Washington, tensions between the EU, US, and China mark a more uncertain path forward — one we explore in detail.
As we finalised this edition, a major announcement by Prime Minister Keir Starmer reignited discussion within the UK’s Turkish community. Proposed reforms to extend the minimum residency requirement for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) from five to ten years have raised understandable concerns, especially among those nearing settlement under the Ankara Agreement. Our report offers clarity, legal insight, and practical guidance on what could lie ahead.
Beyond politics and policy, this issue brings a full spectrum of culture, health, and technology stories. From AI innovation in healthcare to reflections on press freedom and public well-being, these pages are filled with perspectives and ideas that matter.
And because spring is a season for discovery, don’t miss our four-page visual tribute to Istanbul in bloom — an invitation for quick city escapes — and a charming portrait of one of Edinburgh’s most beloved Turkish cafés.
Thank you for reading and sharing this journey with us. Here’s to another season of thoughtful journalism, shared experiences, and stories worth telling.
