The British Council’s Creative Collaborations Grant Programme

The Creative Collaborations Grant Programme, funded by the British Council, is designed to promote cultural partnerships between institutions in Turkey and the UK. This initiative not only supports artistic collaboration but also tackles contemporary global themes like sustainability, gender equality, and cultural exchange. With a strong emphasis on innovative and impactful projects, the programme awarded grants to ten unique ventures, selected from 123 applicants across Turkey. Each grant, amounting to either £7,500 or £17,500, provides institutions with the means to address vital social issues through creative practices that encourage intercultural dialogue.

The British Council’s backing reinforces the importance of cultural exchange between the UK and Turkey, especially in areas of ecological innovation. The Sustainable Life Through Art project stands as a prime example of the programme’s potential to inspire a shift in attitudes towards sustainability and environmental responsibility in both countries.

C4CCI: Pioneering Sustainability through Artistic Collaboration

A significant partner in this project, the Turkish-British Centre for Cultural & Creative Industries (C4CCI), is a hub for innovation that facilitates Turkish-British collaboration within the creative industries. Known for its strategic partnerships with initiatives like TurkishBritish and CreaPost, C4CCI plays a crucial role in the Sustainable Life Through Art project by leading its artistic vision. Under the guidance of Dr Ayla Torun, C4CCI will curate a residency programme in Izmit, Kocaeli, focused on upcycling workshops, digital art creation, and sustainability-themed installations.

Dr Torun explains the project’s objectives: “Our goal is to bridge Turkish and British creativity by merging artistic expression with environmental advocacy. By bringing in local and international artists, we hope to inspire a collective consciousness around sustainability that reaches beyond borders.” The centre’s expertise in cross-cultural projects makes it well-equipped to manage this venture, promoting sustainable development in the arts and reaching a global audience through digital innovation.

SUSAKO: Empowering Women and Promoting Sustainable Practices

Based in Turkey, SUSAKO (Sustainable Art Women’s Cooperative) plays a vital role in the project by focusing on empowering women in sustainability through the arts. Founded on principles of social and ecological awareness, SUSAKO brings a unique perspective to the collaboration. By involving local women in upcycling workshops and creative training, the cooperative fosters skills in sustainable practices and the arts. Through the Sustainable Life Through Art project, SUSAKO is creating opportunities for women to develop new skills in upcycling and eco-friendly art forms, ultimately enriching the community and advocating for environmental change.

The cooperative will also host the final digital and physical exhibition in March 2025 at its historic mansion in Izmit. This exhibition will showcase the diverse works produced during the residency, highlighting the ingenuity of artists who repurposed industrial waste into compelling visual art. For SUSAKO, the project offers an invaluable opportunity to underscore the importance of gender inclusivity in the sustainable art world.

Project Highlights: Events, Exhibition, and Cross-Cultural Impact

Starting in December 2024, the Sustainable Life Through Art project will host a series of activities, beginning with hands-on workshops in Izmit. These workshops are designed to provide artists with practical skills in transforming industrial waste into meaningful, impactful artwork. Central to the programme is a two-day digital residency, where selected artists will explore the intersection of sustainability and creativity through various mediums, including video art, installations, and extended reality (XR) technologies.

The culmination of the project will be a public exhibition, both physical and digital, showcasing the creations developed throughout the residency. This exhibition will be held at SUSAKO’s historical site in Izmit and streamed online, ensuring accessibility to a global audience. The programme will also include a panel discussion on “Creative Industries and Sustainable Art,” bringing together thought leaders in both fields to discuss the role of art in driving environmental and cultural change.

A Call for Artists: Embracing Sustainability through Digital Art

As part of the Sustainable Life Through Art initiative, a call for artists will be announced soon, inviting creatives with an interest in digital and visual art to apply for the residency programme. This opportunity seeks artists passionate about sustainability and community engagement. Ideal candidates will have experience in digital mediums, including new media, video art, and XR technologies, and will be ready to tackle the challenges of eco-conscious artistry.

For those selected, the project provides a platform to engage directly with local communities in Izmit while exploring sustainable themes. The project team is eager to welcome artists who can contribute to this important dialogue on environmental responsibility.

Art for Sustainable Living: The Role of Creativity in Global Change

Art for Sustainable Living is more than just a catchphrase; it’s an urgent call to action. By transforming waste into art, projects like Sustainable Life Through Art highlight the power of creativity to inspire change. This initiative speaks to a larger movement within the art world that addresses environmental issues through creative and digital mediums, pushing the boundaries of traditional art forms to promote sustainability.

In recent years, digital art has proven to be a particularly effective medium for this purpose. With its low environmental impact and accessibility, digital art allows artists to convey complex ideas on sustainability to a broad audience without creating additional waste. The combination of upcycled materials and digital mediums like VR and AR makes it possible for artists to create immersive experiences that evoke a stronger connection to environmental concerns.

A Sustainable Arts Vision: The British Council’s Creative Collaborations Programme

The British Council’s Creative Collaborations Grant Programme aims to foster international partnerships in the arts and culture sectors, supporting projects that tackle pressing global issues. This year, the programme has awarded funding to ten projects that use art as a tool for social change, focusing on themes like gender equality, sustainability, and cultural diversity. By connecting institutions in Turkey and the UK, the programme promotes a shared vision for a more sustainable future through the arts.
