Echoes of the Earth: Living Archive by Refik Anadol
The first solo exhibition of new media artist Refik Anadol, world-renowned for his pioneering works developed with data architecture and artificial intelligence technologies, opens at Serpentine Galleries, London.
A pioneer in the aesthetics of machine intelligence, artist and technologist Refik Anadol is known for his innovative media works and large-scale public installations. Echoes of the Earth: Living Archive, Anadol’s first major institutional solo exhibition in the UK, envelops viewers in immersive environments that utilise years-long experimentation with visual data of coral reefs and rainforests and showcases the creative potential of AI.
The exhibition, which showcasing the boundless creative potential of artificial intelligence, will be held from February 16th to April 7th 2024, at the Serpentine North Gallery. The exhibition will spotlight two site-specific artworks, including the premiere of a new piece inviting visitors to immerse themselves in virtual environments inspired by nature.
At the heart of the exhibition lies the UK premiere of Living Archive: Nature, a bespoke commission conceptualised exclusively for Serpentine North. This installation drapes the gallery walls in AI-generated imagery inspired by data sourced from flora, fungi, and fauna spanning over 16 rainforest locations worldwide, collected through cutting-edge technologies like LiDAR and photogrammetry. Bridging the realms of visual art, science, and technology, Anadol also presents Artificial Realities: Coral, a multisensory experience incorporating sound and video to underscore the pivotal role of coral reefs within the ocean ecosystem. Echoes of the Earth: Living Archive investigates the ways in which technology alters our perception of the natural world and our experience of time and space.
About the Artist
Renowned for his groundbreaking media installations and public artworks, Anadol’s digital creations unfold in real-time, continuously generating mesmerizing and otherworldly forms that envelop audiences within expansive installations.
Refik Anadol, born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1985, serves as the Director of Refik Anadol Studio in Los Angeles and holds a position as a lecturer in UCLA’s Department of Design Media Arts, from which he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree. Anadol’s work resides at the nexus of human creativity and technological advancement. By harnessing the data that surrounds us as his primary medium and collaborating with the neural networks of computerized minds, Anadol offers radical visualizations of our digitized memories, pushing the boundaries of interdisciplinary arts.
