“Madcap” Operetta Premieres to Enthusiastic Acclaim
An Unforgettable Evening of Music and Satire
The Istanbul State Opera and Ballet unveiled the much-anticipated premiere of “Madcap” (Deli Dolu) operetta at the Kadıköy Municipality Süreyya Opera House. With tickets selling out shortly after their release, the audience was treated to a delightful evening of humor, drama, and music wrapped in period-accurate sets and costumes.
This energetic production, praised for its entertaining and intricate plotlines, showcased one of the greatest operettas composed by Cemal Reşit Rey, with a libretto written by his brother Ekrem Reşit Rey. The operetta is a hallmark of Turkey’s modernization efforts during the early Republican period, reflecting themes that were significant to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s vision of a progressive and modernized society.
A Satirical Lens on Hypocrisy
The core theme of “Madcap” is hypocrisy. Though the plot is lighthearted and filled with humor, the operetta stands out for its realism. Through its protagonist, the production highlights issues such as insincerity, pretentiousness, and superficial familial bonds, all of which are deftly woven into a compelling dramaturgical narrative. This work remains one of the most notable operettas from the Rey brothers, balancing wit with poignant social commentary.
Creative Excellence and a Star-Studded Cast
Directed by Şebnem Özsaran, “Madcap” features a captivating orchestral performance led by Murat Kodallı, with musical arrangements by Aytuğ Ülgen and Ulaş Kurugüllü. The production is brought to life with stunning set design by Zeki Sarayoğlu, vibrant costumes by Serdar Başbuğ, atmospheric lighting by Taner Aydın, and choreography by Çiğdem Erkaya Öztürk. The Istanbul State Opera and Ballet Choir, under the leadership of Volkan Akkoç, further elevates the experience.
