TB Magazine: Can you briefly introduce yourself and Be Studio Interiors and Architecture?
Elif Erkmen: Hello! I am an architect with experience working in cities like Istanbul, New York, and London. I graduated from 9 Eylül University Faculty of Architecture and have gained valuable experience at various international firms. Currently, I am the Design Director at Be Studio, which I co-founded with my partner, Bilal Tatar. At Be Studio, we provide comprehensive design services, from concept to on-site implementation, aiming to bring a unique story to every project.
Elif Erkmen discusses how her background in architecture and theater storytelling helps her create unique, story-driven designs in London’s competitive design industry.
TB Magazine: How do London’s design environment and Turkish culture influence your work?
Elif Erkmen: London is a truly unique place in the design world, where you can find a mix of classic Victorian and Georgian styles alongside cutting-edge, contemporary architecture. This diversity reflects the city’s rich history and makes it a design hub. For us at Be Studio, this dynamic environment is a constant source of inspiration. We strive to blend the vibrant, narrative-rich elements of Turkish culture with the innovative spirit of London.
TB Magazine: How do you see the connection between interior design and theater?
Elif Erkmen: Theater is all about storytelling, and we believe that everything in design starts with a story as well. At Be Studio, we place a strong emphasis on the narrative aspect of our projects. We listen to our clients’ stories and reflect these narratives in our designs, creating spaces that offer unique experiences, much like a well-crafted theatrical performance.
TB Magazine: What are your experiences as a Turkish female entrepreneur in the UK’s design industry?
Elif Erkmen: There are certainly challenges, but the supportive environment here has provided incredible opportunities for professional development and creativity. The UK offers a vast array of networking events and a strong focus on fostering talent. Balancing work and personal life is also more manageable here, which has allowed me to pursue my passions in a healthy and sustainable way.
TB Magazine: What are Be Studio’s future goals?
Elif Erkmen: Our short-term goal is to expand our client portfolio and take on more qualified projects. We are particularly focused on growing in the hospitality, F&B (Food and Beverage), and developer sectors. We want to push the boundaries of what we can achieve as a design firm and continue to make an impact in the industry.
TB Magazine: What message would you like to share with the Turkish creative community in the UK?
Elif Erkmen: Let’s stay open to continuous learning and development. The UK provides countless opportunities to grow our skills and knowledge. Sharing our experiences and supporting each other will help us build a stronger community and celebrate our collective successes.
