Beyond the Surface: How a Glasgow Clinic is Redefining What Healthcare Can Feel Like

Esteem Life Medical Group has become one of Scotland’s most talked-about clinics — not by following the standard private healthcare script, but by doing something more ambitious: combining rigorous medical standards with a genuinely holistic approach to health, longevity and aesthetics. TurkishBritish Magazine speaks to its founders about what they set out to build — and why summer is the season to pay attention to your health.

When Dr. Cemal Kavaşoğulları and Mr. Alp Oganalp co-founded Esteem Life Medical Group in Glasgow, they made a choice that is less common in private healthcare than it should be: they refused to separate the medical from the aesthetic, the curative from the preventive, or the clinical from the human. The result is a clinic that has, in a relatively short time, built a following of nearly 20,000 Instagram followers and a reputation — among patients and professionals alike — as one of the most comprehensive and trustworthy medical aesthetics and wellness practices in Scotland.

“We always believed that looking well and feeling well are not separate things,” Dr. Kavaşoğulları explains. “The skin reflects what is happening inside the body. Energy levels, hormonal balance, cellular health — all of it shows on the outside. Our approach was to build a clinic where those two dimensions were treated together.”

The clinic operates under dual registration with Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS) and the Infection Control Officer (ICO) — the regulatory frameworks that govern private healthcare in Scotland and ensure patient safety standards that are equivalent to NHS clinical requirements. For patients unfamiliar with private healthcare, this registration provides important assurance: Esteem Life is not a beauty salon with a medical sounding name. It is a clinically regulated environment in which medical professionals deliver treatments within a comprehensive governance framework.

“We built Esteem Life around one belief: that the highest standards of clinical practice and a genuinely personalised patient experience are not in tension. They are the same thing.”

The Founders: Two Perspectives, One Vision

Dr. Cemal Kavaşoğulları

GP, Aesthetic Medicine Specialist, Director

Dr. Kavaşoğulları brings the perspective of a practising General Practitioner to everything Esteem Life does. His dual training — in general medicine and aesthetic medicine — means he approaches every patient with the whole picture in mind: medical history, current health status, medications, and the clinical context that determines which treatments are appropriate and which require more investigation first. His leadership sets the clinical governance tone for the entire practice. For patients with complex health histories, this background is not a nicety but a clinical necessity.

Mr. Alp Oganalp

Senior Injector, Clinical Lead, Director

Mr. Oganalp is Esteem Life’s Senior Injector and Clinical Lead for aesthetic procedures. His expertise covers the full spectrum of injectable treatments — anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers, skin boosters and advanced facial aesthetics — as well as IV Therapy, which he describes as one of the most exciting developments in preventive and longevity medicine. His clinical leadership ensures that Esteem Life’s aesthetic treatments deliver results that are natural, proportionate, and aligned with each patient’s individual anatomy and health profile. “The goal is never transformation for its own sake,” he says. “The goal is to help someone look exactly like the best version of themselves.”

What Esteem Life Offers: A Comprehensive Picture

The breadth of Esteem Life’s service offering is, in itself, a statement of philosophy. Rather than specialising narrowly in one area, the clinic has built three interconnected pillars of care that reflect how health actually works: not in departments, but as an integrated system.

IV Therapy: The Science Behind the Drip

Of all the services that Esteem Life offers, IV therapy is perhaps the one that raises the most questions from patients unfamiliar with the field. What is it, exactly? Does it work? And is it safe? Mr. Oganalp, who leads the clinic’s IV therapy programme, has answered these questions hundreds of times.

“IV therapy delivers nutrients, vitamins, minerals and therapeutic compounds directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system entirely,” he explains. “When you take a vitamin supplement orally, absorption is variable — the amount your body actually uses depends on your digestive health, the form the nutrient is in, and a range of other factors. IV delivery achieves near-100% bioavailability. The compound goes straight to where it needs to be.”

The clinic’s longevity and wellness IV drips are designed around specific clinical objectives: energy and vitality, immune support, metabolic health, cognitive clarity, and recovery. Each drip is formulated according to the patient’s health profile and goals, established through a prior consultation. This is not a one-size-fits-all offering — the composition varies significantly depending on what each individual actually needs.

Among the more innovative treatments in the clinic’s IV portfolio is Methylene Blue therapy — a compound with over a century of clinical history (first synthesised in 1876, used in hospitals for blood disorders) that is now the subject of significant research in the field of mitochondrial health and cognitive function. The scientific basis is grounded in cellular biology: as we age, our mitochondria — the energy-producing organelles in our cells — become less efficient. Methylene blue has been shown to help bypass certain inefficiencies in the mitochondrial energy chain, potentially improving cellular energy production, reducing oxidative stress, and supporting the cellular repair processes that decline with age.

“We are very careful about how we present methylene blue therapy,” Dr. Kavaşoğulları notes. “It is an emerging and investigational treatment in the wellness context. The science is genuinely exciting — the evidence for its effect on mitochondrial function is real. But we screen every patient carefully, including for G6PD deficiency, and we are transparent about what we know and what is still being studied. That is what responsible clinical practice looks like in this area.”

“The goal of IV therapy is not to replace good nutrition, sleep and exercise — it is to optimise and support them. Used correctly, it is one of the most effective tools we have for personalised preventive medicine.”

Summer and Your Skin: What You Actually Need to Know

Summer is, by a considerable margin, the season in which skin health matters most — and also the season in which skin is most at risk. This is not a reason to stay indoors or avoid the sun; it is a reason to understand what UV radiation does, how to protect against it, and when to seek advice.

Esteem Life’s dermatological expertise includes monthly skin and mole clinics, led by experienced clinicians using dermoscopy — a magnification tool that illuminates and enlarges skin lesions to detect early signs of abnormal cell development. Dr. Yagmur Çiçek Akkurt, dermatologist at the clinic, emphasises that skin cancer awareness should not be confined to May’s Melanoma Awareness Month: “The UV damage that leads to skin cancer accumulates over a lifetime. Summer is when that accumulation accelerates. The habits you form in June and July genuinely affect your risk profile decades later.”

The clinical guidance from Esteem Life on summer skin protection is grounded in evidence rather than cosmetic marketing. The key principles are: SPF 30 or higher every day, not just on beach days or sunny ones; reapplication every two hours outdoors; shade between 11am and 3pm; protective clothing including a wide-brimmed hat; and, critically, no use of sunbeds, which increase melanoma risk significantly regardless of skin tone.

Monthly self-examination using the ABCDE rule — Asymmetry, Border, Colour, Diameter, Evolving — is recommended for everyone. Any mole or lesion that changes in size, shape or colour, bleeds, crusts or simply looks different from its neighbours (“the ugly duckling sign”) warrants prompt professional assessment. Early detection of melanoma is the single most powerful determinant of treatment outcome.

SUMMER SKIN HEALTH: THE ESTEEM LIFE ESSENTIALS

  • SPF 30+ every day, year-round — not just when the sun is visible. UV penetrates cloud cover.
  • Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours when outdoors, and after swimming or sweating.
  • Avoid the sun between 11am and 3pm when UV rays are at peak strength.
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat, UV-protective sunglasses and long sleeves when possible.
  • Never use sunbeds — they significantly increase melanoma risk for all skin types and tones.
  •  Examine your skin monthly: look for the ABCDE signs (Asymmetry, Border, Colour, Diameter, Evolving).
  • See a clinician promptly if a mole changes, bleeds, crusts, or simply looks different from the rest.
  • People of colour: skin cancer can develop in non-sun-exposed areas (soles, palms, under nails) — check everywhere.
  • Book a mole check at Esteem Life’s monthly dermatology clinic if you have any concerns.

Hair Care: A Medical Approach to a Common Problem

Hair loss is among the most psychologically significant health concerns that patients bring to Esteem Life, and among the most under-served by conventional healthcare. The NHS pathway for hair loss is limited; private options range from the highly effective to the entirely unregulated. Esteem Life occupies a specific position: a medically supervised environment in which hair loss is treated as a clinical matter requiring proper diagnosis before any intervention is planned.

The clinic offers a full spectrum of hair care services, from alopecia areata consultations (which involve identifying the underlying cause of patchy hair loss and addressing it appropriately) to hair transplants, PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) hair growth therapy, HydraFacial Keravive for scalp health, Dermalux LED phototherapy, and laser hair removal. Each pathway begins with a consultation that establishes what is actually happening before any treatment is recommended.

“Hair loss is not one condition — it is a symptom that can have many different causes,” explains the clinical team. “Hormonal factors, nutritional deficiencies, stress, autoimmune conditions, genetic factors: all of these require different approaches. Our first job is always to understand what is driving the loss before we recommend how to address it.”

PRP therapy, which involves processing a small sample of the patient’s own blood to concentrate growth factors and then injecting these directly into the scalp, has a growing evidence base for promoting hair follicle activity. When combined with a personalised care plan — potentially including nutritional support, scalp treatments and Dermalux LED phototherapy — the results are measurable and, for many patients, significantly confidence-restoring.

Medical Aesthetics: Natural Results, Clinical Precision

The medical aesthetics arm of Esteem Life covers the full range of treatments that patients seek for facial rejuvenation, skin quality improvement, body contouring and cosmetic concerns — from anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers to skin peels, acne treatment, tattoo removal, body treatments and minor cosmetic surgery.

What distinguishes the clinic’s aesthetic work is the clinical framework within which it operates. Every patient undergoes a consultation before any injectable or procedural treatment. Mr. Oganalp’s training as Senior Injector means that aesthetic decisions are made with a full understanding of facial anatomy, the long-term effects of volume changes, and the interactions between different treatments. The results he seeks, and the results his patients report, are consistently described in terms of natural enhancement rather than visible intervention.

“The patients who are most satisfied with their results are those who look like themselves — just more rested, more defined, more as they remember looking,” he explains. “The patients who are not satisfied are those who were seeking something that wasn’t achievable or appropriate for their anatomy. Our job is to have that honest conversation before any treatment begins.”

The clinic’s acne and acne scarring treatments are a particular area of clinical strength. Acne at any age has significant psychological impact, and the scarring it leaves can persist for decades after the condition itself has resolved. Esteem Life’s combination approach — addressing active acne through medical management while treating existing scarring through skin peels, specific facials and targeted procedures — represents the kind of integrated thinking that distinguishes a medical practice from a beauty salon.
