A Celebration of Turkish Culture in London: 101st Anniversary of the Republic of Turkey

In honour of the 101st anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey, a cultural event organised by the Presidency’s Directorate of Communications was held in London at the renowned National Gallery. Attendees included prominent figures such as Turkey’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Osman Koray Ertaş; Minister for Europe, North America, and the Overseas Territories, Stephen Doughty; and Turkey’s London Embassy Press Counsellor, Büşra Karaduman Aktuna, along with members of the UK Parliament and a host of distinguished guests.
A Memorable Evening of Celebration and Reflection
The event commenced with the Turkish National Anthem, followed by the British National Anthem, setting a respectful and reflective tone. Attendees were then shown a special video message from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, expressing his pride in Turkey’s progress and unity on this significant day.
Presidency Communications Director Fahrettin Altun also shared a video message, extending his heartfelt congratulations on Republic Day and thanking everyone who joined to celebrate this important milestone. Altun’s message highlighted the enduring importance of the Turkish Republic’s values of unity, resilience, and cultural heritage.
Ambassador Ertaş Reflects on the Shared Joy and Solemnity of the Day
In his address, Ambassador Ertaş acknowledged the recent terror attack in Ankara, noting that this year’s Republic Day was met with both celebration and a measure of solemnity. “We are part of a large family, united in both joy and sorrow,” Ertaş remarked. “Despite being in different parts of the world, our love for Turkey and our shared pride in the Republic bring us together. As Mustafa Kemal Atatürk envisioned, we will work together to elevate our nation to a level that surpasses contemporary civilisation.”
Ertaş’s words were met with appreciative applause, as attendees resonated with his message of unity, perseverance, and commitment to Turkey’s future.
Strengthening UK-Turkey Relations: Minister Doughty’s Remarks
Addressing the audience, Minister Stephen Doughty conveyed the UK government’s condolences for the recent tragedy in Ankara. He stressed that the fight against terrorism remains a vital link between the UK and Turkey, reinforcing the two nations’ partnership.
Doughty expressed optimism about furthering bilateral ties, noting the UK’s recent diplomatic efforts to strengthen relations. He highlighted recent talks between Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy as a positive step toward deepening collaboration. “The UK is keen to expand its relations with Turkey, which holds a critical position between Europe and the Middle East,” Doughty noted. “Turkey’s efforts in promoting peace and its ongoing humanitarian contributions have been invaluable.”
Doughty emphasised the shared goal of improving the humanitarian situation in the Middle East, including efforts to facilitate ceasefire agreements and assist civilians in dire conditions.

The evening concluded with a captivating piano performance by Turan Manafzade, an acclaimed Azerbaijani artist. His performance added a touch of artistic grace to the celebration, delighting the audience and providing a moment of cultural connection.
