Turkish Academic Daron Acemoğlu Wins 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics

We are proud to announce that Turkish-American economist Daron Acemoğlu has been awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics, joining the prestigious ranks of Turkish Nobel laureates.

Daron Acemoglu wins 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics, marking Turkey’s third Nobel achievement. Acemoğlu, along with fellow economists Simon Johnson and James A. Robinson, was recognised for his groundbreaking work on the role of institutions in shaping economic growth, particularly in post-colonial societies.

Acemoglu’s research has revealed how inclusive political and economic institutions can lead to long-term prosperity, while extractive institutions often result in poverty and instability. His work has fundamentally changed the way economists and policymakers understand the foundations of economic success.

This marks the third Nobel Prize awarded to a Turkish individual. This is Turkey’s third Nobel Prize, following Orhan Pamuk in Literature (2006) and Aziz Sancar in Chemistry (2015). Orhan Pamuk received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2006, and Aziz Sancar was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2015 for his contributions to DNA repair mechanisms.

Daron Acemoğlu wins the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics for his work on the impact of institutions on economic development. Acemoğlu’s research has global implications, influencing economic strategies worldwide. As Turkish British Magazine, we proudly celebrates this milestone for Prof. Acemoglu.
