Karagöz & Hacivat Workshops for Kids!

Discover the Magic of Traditional Shadow Play: Karagöz & Hacivat Workshops for Kids! Yunus Emre Institute London is organising Karagöz & Hacivat workshops on October 26th and November 2nd, designed for children aged 7-12. In these creative workshops, participants will have the chance to craft their own shadow puppets and step into the magical world of Karagöz & Hacivat.

Since 2018, Yunus Emre Institute London has captivated audiences across the UK with its Karagöz & Hacivat project. This traditional shadow play, which dates back to the Ottoman era, introduces children and adults alike to the enchanting and educational aspects of Turkish culture.

The performances, brought to life by award-winning actor Mengü Türk—who trained at the Karagöz & Hacivat Museum in Bursa—are presented in both English and Turkish. The show has been staged at prestigious venues such as Riverley Primary School, Leighton House Museum, Cambridge Turkish School, and Horizon Romsey Community Centre, offering a fun and engaging experience for children while fostering cross-cultural connections.

In addition to performances, the project also features puppet-making workshops. In 2022, the Karagöz & Hacivat theatre was showcased at the TaPS Perspectives program, organised by the International Schools Theatre Association (ISTA), where over 90 theatre students from various countries participated. More recently, in 2024, a puppet-making workshop was held at Mountview Academy’s Peckham Sessions Open House event, where families and children enjoyed creating their own shadow puppets and performing their shows.

Yunus Emre Institute London continues to promote Turkish cultural heritage globally, building bridges between cultures and introducing traditional Turkish shadow play to new audiences. The project has received positive feedback from participants, and the growing number of workshop invitations ensures its success and continuity.

The Institute regularly organises workshops for children aged 7-12. For more information, bookings, or to bring the workshop to your school, YEE London can be contacted directly.
